My boy has only been riding his bike for a couple of weeks but has shot up in height and has outgrown it. I had a quick look on FB marketplace earlier for an upgrade and found a Raleigh Burner BMX.
I was immediately transported back to the 80’s and my blue and yellow one, mint condition original ones like I had are now going for £500+.
This little kids size one was cheap and has a chrome finish, it needs a little TLC but looks awesome.
I gave it a quick check over when we got back and he was off, really happy that bigger wheels equals faster speeds. He was straight on to trying stunts.
I told him about my days at the BMX track and racing my mates and doing jumps. I think I was more excited than him for building his skills.
It also means, I’m now on the lookout for a BMX for me and my daughter so we can practice stunts together; at least Fran will only have to make one trip to A&E.
The main thing it highlighted for me was that I still have the ability to get out and do these things with my kids. It’s the reason why I try to stay in shape.
They were different times in the 80’s and my Dad had a back problem so he could never really join in any of the climbing, riding or football type things that some of the other Dads did. I don’t want my kids to miss out on that side of me.
Getting fit gives so much more to your life than simply weight loss or fitness. The bonus is it’s never too late to start.
What do you miss from your childhood?
