Over the past few weeks, I’ve been heading up to bed pretty early. I generally do when on holiday, as I share a room with K and it’s easier to get her to settle and not have FOMO if I’m in the room. I then think I might as well take the extra rest.
When we got back, with hindsight I was fighting off some lurgy and felt like I needed early nights. Last week, that lurgy hit and sleep quality was poor with coughing etc.
Being one to not give in to illness, I started increasing my sleep time to prepare for returning to jiu jitsu this week.
I don’t get back till after 10pm, followed by a shower and winding down, it’s at least 10.45pm before I’m asleep.
To stick with the sleep / wake consistency I’ve been aiming to stay awake for lights out at 10.30pm to help the transition this week be easier. Yawning while being strangled seems like bad manners.
How people manage to actually go out and party till the early hours and still function as grown ups amazes me. Although, in my party days I would often heads straight to work from a night out and have a little Power Nap under my desk while the cleaners finished their rounds.
Oh how youth is wasted on the young.
If you do have a social life that leads to lost sleep, the key is to still be consistent with your wake up time. Get up at the same time and top up with a Power Nap, 20-30 minutes later in the day but not past 3pm. Then try to head to bed at the normal time at the first opportunity.
